Nanny State
Get ready, the nanny state is coming! If you don’t quite know what that term means, it’s where the state determines that it must protect everyone from themselves, at the expense of their civil liberties. One of the worst offenders is the UK. The UK has more cameras watching its citizens than any nation in the world all in the name of keeping its population safe. Now on a street in London they are experimenting with padding lamp posts so inattentive pedestrians won’t hurt themselves when they run into them. (Maybe they can record them and put the results onto a DVD for everyone to laugh at them). This is just an other stupid idea to protect people from themselves.
The UK isn’t exempt from such stupidity either. In Kentucky one legislator wants to make it illegal to post to a website anonymously illegal, to protect people from cyber-bullying. In other words, he wants to trample on the first amendment …you know the one where it states that the gov’t “shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press”.
Little by little the world is turning into a nanny state where the gov’t knows what is good for you and wants to take care of you from the cradle to the grave. And the people are letting it happen.
Those who give up essential liberties for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin

Hello Mad Okie, I'm a Tulsa native, although I moved away when I was 12 and ended up spending a good part of my adult life in Houston instead. I've now lived in the UK for just over 5 years and am married to a British citizen. Yes, there are cameras everywhere. I still haven't fully decided what I think. My "civil liberty" side is bothered. The side of me, though, that's impressed when criminals can be tracked (after a crime) during the investigative stage is delighted that those video images are available to the police. I know there's the old saying that if you don't have anything to hide...etc. But that's too simplistic. So for me, I just live with them now and don't think much about it. Thought you might want a view of an American living over here in England. By the way, I have a link to your site on my blog -- on behalf of my hometown. Janet

Hi Janet, welcome "back" so to speak. Apparently, the cameras arent as effective as some are led to believe.
