These Three Things - Type O Negative

Peter Steele the front man for Type O Negative died today. I didn't know much about the band, always assumed they were you atypical Metal band, but something was different about their Dead Again album from 2007.

These Three Things

The child is torn
From the womb unbaptised
There's no question
It's infanticide
I'm guilty so therefore condemned
Destroying angels must come to an end
Now in limbo
Deprived of paradise
That's not so nice

At the end I'll escort you to hell
The dark one's forces
Lock your flaming cell
To murder the ones unborn
The worst sin you've ever performed
There are two other things I will tell
Know them well

With due respect
Hear these words of caution
If considering an abortion
If you dig boiling sulphur
To which I will not concur
Leading to a path of misfortune
No one won

Of a land that shuns the son
So alien call it Area 5-1
Should there be failure to convert Zion
What came as a lamb
Returning as a lion

Not a nation but a self proclaim-ed state
Since the year of our lord 1-9-4-8
The road to redemption leads through deserts
Rocky though the trip through is well worth it

I am the duel of the fisherman Simon
He brought alpha, omega, yes I'm the one
The twins fell beginning Armadgeddon
So the whore too who dwelleth in Babylon
All his people gathered round
Through forgiveness salvation found

“There are no atheists in foxholes, they say, and I was a foxhole atheist for a long time. But after going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly, it made me realize my mortality. And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what’s after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it’s a frightening thought to go nowhere. I also can’t believe that people like Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa - Peter Steele April 2007

Disney's Spinnin'

Disney's Spinnin' - Galactic Cowboys

Looks like now the Beatles weren't so bad
Mr. Manson makes the Four look fab
'Cause death and evil is what sells today
And Walter Disney's spinnin' in his grave.

Grandpa's Woodstock acid wasn't brown
President lit up and passed it down
The days of outrage have all gone away
I bet that Disney's spinnin' in his grave.

Remember back to days when
Kids were kids and it was fun
And the kids didn't carry guns
While we were pleasure hunting
We got tricked like Elmer Fudd
Brainwashed by the media.

Inconvenienced by a small mistake
Mother chooses to exterminate
I wonder what the forefathers would say
The land of the free, home of the depraved
I bet that Disney's spinnin' round
I bet that Disney's spinnin'
I bet that Disney's spinnin' in his grave.

Neighborhood Bully

Neighborhood Bully
Bob Dylan - Infidels (1983)

Well, the neighborhood bully, he’s just one man,
His enemies say he’s on their land.
They got him outnumbered about a million to one,
He got no place to escape to, no place to run.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive,
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive.
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin,
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land,
He’s wandered the earth an exiled man.
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn,
He’s always on trial for just being born.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized,
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad.
The bombs were meant for him.
He was supposed to feel bad.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him,
’Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

He got no allies to really speak of.
What he gets he must pay for, he don’t get it out of love.
He buys obsolete weapons and he won’t be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace,
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease.
Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly.
To hurt one they would weep.
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Every empire that’s enslaved him is gone,
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon.
He’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand,
In bed with nobody, under no one’s command.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon,
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on.
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth,
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

What’s anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin’, they say.
He just likes to cause war.
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed,
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed.
He’s the neighborhood bully.

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers?
Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill,
Running out the clock, time standing still,
Neighborhood bully.

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls

The last weekend I stumbled across a band that can be best described as a cross between Iron Maiden, Metallica and Stryper.

The Christian Progressive Metal band out of Athens, Georgia didn't start as a band apparently, but as a one man operation from Matt Smith, with crunchy guitars, high soaring vocals, furious drumming, and inspirational lyrics. That is all there in their sophmore album, Mirror of Souls, except now there is a full band behind Smith.

This band is what I wanted Stryper to be, but they had to much filler on their albums for my liking. Theocracy may have some filler on thiers, but you will be hard pressed to find it, as they arent aiming for the "pop" audience like Stryper was.

Its also amazing how Theocracy is being acknowledged in the secular world, though the message in their music is clear.

If you go to their website (www.theocracymusic.com/), there is a streaming audio clip you can sample, or you can download some free Christmas music (yeah I know its a little early for Christmas music)

We're not going to take it

We're not going to take it - Twisted Sister

Oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

we've Got The Right To Choose And
there Ain't No Way We'll Lose It
this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song
we'll Fight The Powers That Be Just
don't Pick Our Destiny 'cause
you Don't Know Us, You Don't Belong

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

oh You're So Condescending
your Gall Is Never Ending
we Don't Want Nothin', Not A Thing From You
your Life Is Trite And Jaded
boring And Confiscated
if That's Your Best, Your Best Won't Do

oh.....................
oh.....................
we're Right (yeah)
we're Free (yeah)
we'll Fight (yeah)
you'll See (yeah)

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore
no Way!

Wake up (The Sleeping Giant)

pretty appropriate song for today (and the near future), dont you think?

Wake up (The Sleeping Giant) by Twisted Sister

Gather 'round us, join with the band
Together we're stronger, together we'll stand
Say what can you do, well, we've got a plan
And we're gonna take you to the promised land

It's time to remember, it's time to move on
They've pushed it too far, they don't know what they've done
If it's a fight that they want then it's a fight that they'll get
We never lose, honey so place your bets

Long ago and far away
We had a voice, you know that we had a say
We won't live for yesterday
Ready or not, we're gonna have our way

We got the numbers, yeah, we got the might
We got the strenght and we got the right
We got the reason, yeah, we got the night
So wake up the sleeping giant

Not one more minute, not one more day
We've waited too long, can't let our chance slip away
We won't stop 'til we get it, we won't stop 'til we're done
We'll bite and we'll claw until they've lost and we've won

We took all we're gonna take
It's got to stop, you know there's too much at stake
Who the hell are they to say
What we can do and how we can play

Whoa
Wake up the sleeping giant
Whoa
Wake up the sleeping giant

Let's push to the limit, so let's push 'til we're home
We've been good too long, they wouldn't leave us alone
It's our rights they're abusing, it's our right to fight back
So rally the troops and let's start the attack

Whoa
We got the numbers, you know we got the might
Whoa
Wake up the sleeping giant
Whoa
We got the reason and we're ready to fight
Whoa
Wake up the sleeping giant

Listen to the wind

On the eve of the anniversary of one of the worst things to happen on American soil, I was listening to the Atlanta Rhythm Section's song Listen to the Wind, which came out in 1989. It is a dark and ominous song, especially for ARS.

Listen to the wind
Blowin' like a hurricane
Screaming in our ears
Read between the lines
It doesn't take an Einstein
The message is quite clear
Skyscrapers tower above this town
But one of these days
It could all fall down

Wish I had a bag of gold
Buried in a hole
That could be my ace
A little piece of land
Where I could make a stand
That's for just in case
Everybody's living under the gun
There's no place to hide
And it's to late to run
Run, run, run for cover
You better run, run for cover

Take a look around you
The hour's getting late
The time bomb keeps ticking
We cant afford to wait
It's everybodys problem
It's yours as much as mine
We've got to find and answer
We're running out of time

Listen to the wind
Blowin' like a hurricane
Listen to the wind
Come on Listen to it
Listen to it, Listen to it

Skyscrapers tower above this town
But one of these days
It could all fall down
I don't know the answer
But I do know for sure
I don't want to be a soldier
in the third world war
I don't want to be a soldier

Take a look around you
The hour's getting late
The time bomb keeps ticking
We cant afford to wait
It's everybody's problem
It's yours as much as mine
We've got to find and answer
We're running out of time

Listen to the wind
Blowin' like a hurricane
Listen to the wind
Come on Listen to it
Listen to it, Listen to it

Tinted Windows

Tulsa's own Taylor Hanson has joined forces with Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) & Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) to form a Power Pop group called Tinted Windows, The CD was released today, but it seems to be pretty scarce around these parts for some odd reason, considering the local tie in. So until you can find it, here are a couple of videos to tide you over...

UPDATE: I finally listened to the whole CD, there really isnt a bad song in the bunch, you can definitally hear the Cheap Trick & Smashing Pumpkins influences.

Remnants of Hurricane Gustav

Two weeks ago we made a mid week trip to Branson, Mo to go to Silver Dollar City’s “Gospel Fest”. Even though the remnant of Gustav came pouring down on us starting Tuesday evening, we still managed to listen to some great southern gospel music.

Yeah, Yeah, I know… “Aren’t you the guy that likes Megadeth and Alice Cooper?” Yes, I am. I like a wide range of music. In fact I can say the only music I don’t like is Rap/Hip-hop, most modern country and Christian contemporary, The latter because it seems to be all about “me” instead of God… but I digress…

As mentioned we saw quite a few good acts, including Tulsa area Forgiven Quartet, the Whisnants, and Poet Voices. We also managed to snag up a few CDs. So far the one that really stands out is Mitchel Jon’s Pouring Rain. The sound is hard to nail down, it’s got elements of southern gospel, blues, and soul. The CD Starts off with a cover of “People Get Ready”. Other songs were written by Gospel veteran Phil Cross.

Needless to say, Im about to wear the CD out...

Along came a Spider

Released yesterday was the latest CD of Alice Cooper's prolific career, this being the 5th in 8 years (unlike the opening act for the BoK center, who has only released one album of new material since 1979) . His recent releases ranged from Industrial metal, to "garage band" to a more traditional rock album.

Along Came a Spider is a concept album that takes bits and pieces of his various styles, and weaves a story about a serial killer who removed one of the legs of each of his eight victims to make his very own spider. True to Alice Cooper's style the songs arent remotely gruesome as that sounds.

Towards the end of the CD there is Salvation which sounds like it could  be a testament of his own personal demons of the past.

Any chance of salvation
Someone died for me
Washed in blood he cared enough to pity me.

On another note, another CD I recently aquired is 3 Doors Down's 4th CD which is self titled. It starts off with a hard rocking Train, and then goes into Citizen Soldier which was written for the National Guard.

This is a good solid album, but I would recommend going to Best Buy to get your copy because the best song, Feet in the Water, is a Best Buy exclusive.

Oh my God.

Oh my God - Jars of Clay

Oh my God, look around this place
Your fingers reach around the bone
You set the break and set the tone
Flights of grace, and future falls
In present pain
All fools say, "Oh my God"

Oh my God, Why are we so afraid?
We make it worse when we don't bleed
There is no cure for our disease
Turn a phrase, and rise again
Or fake your death and only tell your closest friend
Oh my God.

Oh my God, can I complain?
You take away my firm belief and graft my soul upon your grief
Weddings, boats and alibis
All drift away, and a mother cries

Liars and fools; sons and failures
Thieves will always say
Lost and found; ailing wanderers
Healers always say
Whores and angels; men with problems
Leavers always say
Broken hearted; separated
Orphans always say
War creators; racial haters
Preachers always say
Distant fathers; fallen warriors
Givers always say
Pilgrim saints; lonely widows
Users always say
Fearful mothers; watchful doubters
Saviors always say

Sometimes I cannot forgive
And these days, mercy cuts so deep
If the world was how it should be, maybe I could get some sleep
While I lay, I dream we're better,
Scales were gone and faces light
When we wake, we hate our brother
We still move to hurt each other
Sometimes I can close my eyes,
And all the fear that keeps me silent falls below my heavy breathing,
What makes me so badly bent?
We all have a chance to murder
We all feel the need for wonder
We still want to be reminded that the pain is worth the thunder

Sometimes when I lose my grip, I wonder what to make of heaven
All the times I thought to reach up
All the times I had to give
Babies underneath their beds
Hospitals that cannot treat all the wounds that money causes,
All the comforts of cathedrals
All the cries of thirsty children - this is our inheritance
All the rage of watching mothers - this is our greatest offense

Oh my God
Oh my God
Oh my God

Ball of confusion

The prophetic words of the Temptations...

People moving out,
People moving in,
Why, because of the color of their skin,
Run, run, run, but you just can’t hide.

An eye for an eye,
Tooth for a tooth,
Vote for me and I’ll set you free,
Rap on, brother, rap on.

Well, the only person talking about loving thy brother is the preacher,
And it seems nobody’s interested in learning, but the teacher,
Segregation, demonstration, intergration, determination, aggravation, humiliation,
Obligation to our nation.

Ball of confusion,
That’s what the world is today, hey.

The sale of pills is at an all time high,
Young folks walk with their heads in the sky,
The cities aflame in the summertime,
And oh the beat goes on.

Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul-shooting rockets to the moon,
Kids growing up too soon,
Politicians say, more taxes will solve everything,
The band played on.

So, round and around and around we go,
Where the world’s headed, nobody knows

Oh, great googamooga,
Can’t you hear me talking to you,
Just a ball of confusion,
That’s what the world is today, hey.

Fear in the air, tension everywhere,
Unemployment rising fast,
The beatles new record’s a gas,
And the only safe place to live,
Is on an indian reservation,
The band played on.

Eve of destruction, tax deduction,
City inspectors, bill collectors, mod clothes in demand,
Population out of hand, suicide, too many bills,
Hippies moving to the hills,
People all over the world are shouting, end the war!,
And the band played on.

Great googamooga,
Can’t you hear me talking to you,
Just a ball of confusion,
That’s what the world is today, yea-yea,
Just a ball of confusion,
Tell ya that’s what the world is today, yea-yea,
Just a ball of confusion, oh!

A tale of two bands...

The first band is Evanescence, a gothic metal band out of Arkansas. Even though they have stated in the past that they were Christians, in 2003 when CD was promoted in Christain books stores, one of the members stated that "We're actually high on the Christian charts, and I'm like, What the f*** are we even doing there?" If they really are Christians they destroyed their testimony. They would rather be thought of as a secular band and to deny Christ.

On the other end of the spectrum is a metal band out of Sweden called Astral doors (they sound a bit like Ronnie James Dio). They are not a Christian band, though many of their lyrics reference the church and Christ, when asked if they were a Christian band, they replied, "That is very strange, due to the fact that we had crucified priests on the cover to our debut album. The cover was chosen by the German Salvation Army as the worst album cover of the year. How about that? Astral Doors is definitely not a Christian band. We're not religious what so ever. I hope however that we have fans from all kinds of religions."

Music sales down again...

And according to this article the blame "should be leveled at piracy" becasue it is "the biggest problem the industry faces."

Personally I think they should look in a mirror, becasue all the bad publicity of the RIAA suing grandmothers for piracy and the older music collectors completeing the re-buying of their old LP/Cassette tape collections onto CD are two big aspects of the drop off... the last aspect? Here is last weeks Billboard top 10:

1)  Rihanna "Umbrella"
2)  Shop Boyz "Party Like A Rock Star"
3)  Fergie "Big Girls Don't Cry"
4)  Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah"
5)  T-Pain "Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin')"
6)  Maroon 5 "Makes Me Wonder"
7)  Avril Lavigne "Girlfriend"
8)  Justin Timberlake "Summer Love"
9)  Amy Winehouse "Rehab"
10) Fabolous "Make Me Better"

In other words, there is nothing on that list I would want to listen to, much less buy (except Amy Winehouse).

I rest my case...

UPDATE: I thought this sounded a bit familier, as they reported that sales were down about 6 months ago as well (and I made almost the same comments)

This whole Paris deal...

Reminds me of a song, especially the part where they were concerend the  spoiled brat may commit suicide...

Obie said he was going to put
us in the cell.  Said, "Kid, I'm going to put you in the cell, I want your
wallet and your belt."  And I said, "Obie, I can understand you wanting my
wallet so I don't have any money to spend in the cell, but what do you
want my belt for?"  And he said, "Kid, we don't want any hangings."  I
said, "Obie, did you think I was going to hang myself for littering?"
Obie said he was making sure, and friends Obie was, cause he took out the
toilet seat so I couldn't hit myself over the head and drown, and he took
out the toilet paper so I couldn't bend the bars roll out the - roll the
toilet paper out the window, slide down the roll and have an escape.

United Abominations

While we were away on our trip a couple of weeks ago Megadeth released another Album and I was probably the first person in Branson, MO to pick it up.

On this CD you get a feeling that Dave Mustaine knows the end is near, but which end am I talking about? In 2002 Megadeth was disbanded because of a freak injury to his left arm that made it impossible for him to make a fist, much less play a guitar. After 5 months of rehab he had to re-teach his left hand how to play the guitar. In that same year, Dave Mustaine found Christ. (Playing golf with Alice Cooper might have had something to do with that). Throughout Megadeth’s career you could see that Mustaine was looking for something, and it looks like he has finally found it.

"I've tried everything in my life. I was baptized Lutheran and brought up as a Jehovah's Witness. My mom was Jewish. I experimented with black magic and witchcraft and read the satanic bible. But I became a Christian about three years ago and that's a positive thing."

so what is this end I am referring to? I imagine it's two-fold Mustaine was told that his injury may can come back, leaving him unable to perform, and thus the end of his career. the second being with the end of the world. Mustaine has never been a fan of the UN, or world governments in general, as witnessed by earlier songs in his career (Peace sells but who's buying, Symphony Of Destruction), but on this album he lets go with both barrels taking aim at the UN in the title track and the US gov't in Washington is next… and he's not subtle about it...

Disengage their minds, sabotage their health
Promote sex, and war, and violence in the kindergartens
Blame the parents and teachers; it's their fault, "Annuit Coeptis"
Attack the church dynamic, attack the family
Keep the public undisciplined till nothing left is sacred and
The "have-nots" get hooked and have to go to the "haves" just to cop a fix

One of my favorite track is Never Walk Alone...A Call To Arms

When you feel that somethings wrong
Ill shelter you and keep you warm
Ill never let you walk alone
I loved you when you still hated me
Im comin and it wont be long
Time to reap what I have sewn
Never ever let you walk alone
I know your enemy it once was me

There is no doubt about who he's referring to here?

May God bless you Dave, and may he use you to draw a dying generation to him. After seeing how some have reacted to the news that you are now a Christian, you will need him more now than ever.

eMusic.com

At first glance this site showed promise, that quicky fell off. I initially found this site while looking for a song from the 80's by the Ravyns called "Dont Leave Me This Way". So to get the song I signed up for their 14 day/50 song free trial...7 days later I sent in my request to cancel. Most of the music is done by unknows, and some of the stuff you will know has either been rerecorded by the original artist (and not well), or by cover artists. I only Downloaded 2 full albums, and a handfull of other songs. it took 3 days to find the remaining 9 songs to reach my 50 song quota, by contrast, I was downloading as many as 30 songs a day on former website IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive). and most of the artists on eMusic I would have passed on there as well.

But enough about the service, let me at least brag about the one find I did run accross that at least made the effort worth my time. Back in the 80s there was a band called Van Zant, fronted by Johnny Van Zant, who is the brother of (deceased) Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie and .38 Special's frontman Donnie. My search did not yield the desired result, but introduced me to cousin Jimmie Van Zant. Obviously he was not as polished as his more famous cousins, sounding more like a garage band, but he has every bit of the driving Southern Rock vibe, and it shows in his cover of Simple Man. So if you can find a copy, pick it up, or sign up for your free trial of eMusic.

Mp3s, FM Transmitters and Rental Cars, oh my!

For about a year now I have had an .mp3 player, a Sansa c150 2GB affair, and I have really enjoyed it, put in 25+ hours of music, hit shuffle and I will hear The Statler Brothers on one song and Megadeth on the next.

For our trip to Colorado last year I broke down and bought and FM transmitter for the mp3 player (for those that don’t know, you set the transmitter to an unoccupied frequency on your FM dial and then you can listen to the mp3 player through your car radio… how cool is that?). The first one I purchased, was a Sony DCC-FMT3 Car FM Stereo Transmitter. It had two wires, one to plug into the mp3 player, the second to use as an antenna. The output was so poor that I had to literally attach the antenna wire to my trucks antenna. To make matters worse any time a sudden change in volume occurred the volume was muffled, kind of like it was trying to normalize on the fly. To be fair, it did the job in my truck, but now I’m going to be renting a couple of cars over the summer and the Sony wasn’t going to hack it.

Rewind to yesterday. On my porch was a box from Amazon with my new Kensington Universal FM Transmitter inside. I took it out of the package, plugged it in, plugged in the Sansa, turned on the ignition, set the channel and wow what a difference, sound quality was great (for an FM transmission) , no antenna wire to worry about, and a quick drive around the block showed no problems. Needless to say it exceeded my expectations. I even had to reduce the volume on the mp3 player, the Sony required it to be full blast. I’m guessing that will save me a little bit in battery life.

Album Sales Drop... Again

According to this article, Album sales have dropped for a seventh consecutive year, whiloe digital music is seeing strong sales...

I see reasoning for the drop in three areas.

1) People have finished up replacing their Old Vinyl and Cassettes with CDs

2) Very little is being produced that people want to buy

3) Radio just doesnt work for music anymore, just flip through the dial around Tulsa, you hear the same song over and over again till you are sick of it.

Napster and its ilk allowed you to try new music RISK FREE, if you liked what you heard you went out to find more of the same and in most cases bought the CD. It was a double edged sword for the music industry though, not only could you download the hits you could also find out if the rest of the album was filler. Are you familier with the term one hit wonders? most of them only had one hit becasue that was all anyone could stand to listen to!

Welcome to my nightmare!

In what I can say was the best concert I have ever atteneded, Alice Cooper and opening local act New Science rocked the *sold out Brady Theater last night, mixing classics with newer stuff that traversed the 5 decades that his career touched... which was apparent by the age group of those in the audience which ranged from 6-60.

The 58 year old Alice Cooper put on an hour and a half show that would wear out a much younger act. The show opened with his band dressed in black wearing phantom of the opera masks, those were shed after the first song. the interaction with the audience was entertaining and it looked like he was enjoying putting on his show.

A new addition to the act is his daughter who played various roles on the stage ranging from a vampire, a battered wife and eventually Paris Hilton which had everybody in stitches... especially when her teacup "dog" attacked her and she pulled herself off the ground with a "bloody" face.

The stage was set up in two tier fashion with an open coffin, and a guillotine which was eventually used to lop the Coops head off. It was a Macabre stageshow that didnt take itself seriously at all.

The opening act, New Science, also impressed me. they were a last minute addition to the line up when Jada Pinkett Smith's (Will Smiths wife) band Wicked Wisdom was no longer on the marquee. again, it looked like they were having fun, which counts for a lot, they were tight, had a grungish sound (I thought the vocals reminded me a bit of Alice In Chains, but it was hard to tell)

How am I supposed to find any music?

First the RIAA wants to shut down the P2P services, which is my primary way of finding new music, cause most of Tulsa radio doesnt play what I want to hear, now they want to shut down lyric sites.

So let me get this straight... I hear a song I like on the radio (I know it's a long shot, but it has hapened before) but the DJ doesnt bother to say who the song is by. As it stands now, if I remember a few words from the song, I can type them into google and see what it comes up with, usually directing me to one of these lyric sites... no lyric sites, no finding out what the song or who the artist was, no sale... duh!

Not in Checotah anymore

On the 15th of November Carrie Underwood's new CD "Some Hearts" will find its way onto record shelves. Carrie's strong voice belts out some solid country pop music. There are quite a few really strong stand outs on the album including "I'm not in Checotah anymore" which compares her new life to the old one she just left, the inspirational "Jesus, Take the wheel" (the first single off of the CD) and the Title song “Some Hearts” which is a nice cover of Marshall Crenshaw’s hit from back in the 80s. I found myself enjoying every song on the CD and I didn’t notice any filler songs to speak of… and I’m not a big fan of country music!

It's nice that country & inspirational music can co-exist on the same chart, unfortunately if a rock act is labeled as "Christian" they have a tendency to disappear quickly, either off the charts (Alice Cooper) or as a band in general (Creed & Evanescence). Gene Simmons (of Kiss) on American Idol last year said you cant be a Christian and a pop singer. I dont agree with that statement, like anything in life it depends on what you do (or in this case sing about)

Jackpot!!!

No, I didn't win the lottery. I am a music fan in the truest sense of the word. My collection consists of everything from heavy techno metal to gospel quartet music, from the famous to the obscure.

While perusing amazon.com one day I discovered a CD that I previously had on cassette was now available, something I thought would never be released on CD (from 1986). After doing a little research I found out that Wounded Bird Records had acquired the rights to a ton of out of print records and I loaded up... Marshall Crenshaw, The Outlaws, Blackfoot, Axe, Poco & Vandenburg!

So if there is a CD that you have not been able to find go to www.woundedbird.com and see if they have what you are looking for!

They know they are losing the PR battle

RIAA admits CD-R more a threat than P2P

They are starting to sound like a broken record (no pun inteneded... really!). Wasn't this the battle cry in the 70's & 80's concerning blank cassette tapes.

What is really amusing is they (again) have no tangible numbers to back up their claim. If they are going off of CD-R sales then did they figure data storage? How about someone copying their CDs for personal backups (or in my case using the copy and leaving the original at home tucked away safely away from scratches, theft & sticky fingers).

After this fails (and it will) it will not suprise me if they target used record stores, since they recieve no cut from those sales, there is no chance of someone turning around and purchasing it new, as there is with P2P sampling or borrowing a burned CD from a friend...

One thing the RIAA is pushing for is "copy protection". Radio Shack has a nice little device to conter any and ALL copy protection:

Thanks to P2P I purchase more CDs
Thanks to the RIAA I purchase them USED

Thanks to "Piracy", I purchase more CDs

Ill get to the second half of that quote in a minute...

I drove to the local Best Buy to get me a copy of Alice Coopers new CD Dirty Diamonds
and while I was at it I also purchased the CD from 80s sounding retro band "Killers" (who will be performing to a sold out audience next weekend ).

One the back I noticed a lable that took up a 5th of the cover... it reads "FBI Anti-Piracy Warning: Unauthorized copying is punishable under federal law."

first off... dont we have more serious things to be worrying about... like some radical muslim  nuking NY?

secondly... if it wasnt for "Unauthorized copying" I would have never heard of the Killers, much less purchase their album!

Next time Ill just wait a couple of months... oh, and the rest of the quote?

Thanks to "Piracy", I purchase more CDs
Thanks to the RIAA, I buy them used...

Dirty Diamonds

Alice Cooper has been rather prolific in the last few years, releasing 4 CDs since 2000. It started with Brutal Planet which without a doubt was his hardest music to date, easily overpowering his mid 80s “hair metal” endeavors. It was a socially aware album that played a bit off of his “Last Temptation” album (1994) with various songs attesting to his Christian faith and worldly conflict. After that was Dragontown (2001), similar in style to Brutal Planet, but definitely one of his weaker efforts. In 2003 he released “the eyes of Alice Cooper” which played up to the garage band sound that had been dominating the airwaves, I thought it was a fine album, but it has received mixed reviews.

In August Alice will be releasing “Dirty Diamonds” I managed to get my hands on a “copy” and it definitely reverts back to the Alice Cooper of old… in the same vein as “Billion Dollar Babies”. there arent what I would call bad songs on the CD, but some are better than others, my personal favorites include the title track, which sounds like it could have been a James Bond theme song, "Perfect", and "Run down the Devil". there are some stabs at Hip-hop ("Stand") and country ("The Saga of Jesse Jane"), both having the Alice cooper twist.

The CD will be available August 2nd
