8 years down, 8 to go?

In 1998, residents residing in 519 buildings in Manchester Square, a subdivision near LAX in the 65db contour, were part of a buy out. These buildings consisted of both homes and apartments. The FAA and LAX are finishing up the program after some delays (they said it would take 3 years)

This part of this article sounds very familiar, with a different result. LAX listened to the residents:

“The airport agency, Los Angeles World Airports, approached the residents of Manchester Square in the late-1990s with an offer. It would spend some of the money it collects from passenger ticket fees to insulate their homes against the roar of the jets.

A group of neighbors had another idea. Their small community had begun to break down, as the apartment houses crowded in and addicts came looking for drugs. Every once in a while, the pop of gunfire would shatter the quiet of the night. Why, they asked, doesn't the airport just buy the homes outright?”

Roscoe Turner has asked for a resolution to be placed on the city council’s agenda for this Thursday. I agree with the councilor, this has been going on for too long, its time to start. The residents know changes wont happen overnight, but if the program had been done right from the beginning, like LAX, they would be done now.

No such thing as bad press

After the reviews for the DaVinci Code came in for the from Rotten Tomatoes at 9% (now at 22%), boycott calls from church leaders and bannings from various countries. the Movie opens very strong, In fact it came it at #1 for international openings.

If it was just bad reviews it wouldnt have made a splash, but it was the religious community drawing attention to it that made people more curious about it.

Sometimes its best to keep your mouth shut... you hear that Pat?

Grasping at straws

By now Im sure you have found out about the deal that the city (under LaFortune) gave the Oilers and the Talons 180k of money we dont have to spend.

This is what I found funny, LaFortune said about justifying the payment  "Professional teams in our city are absolutely critical to our city's economic well-being,"

How can he say that with a straight face? If that is the case no wonder we are in such bad shape because the current stadium is less than half full at any given game! As much as I love the Talons, the are a "professional team" in name only...

And speaking of filling stadiums, a couple of months ago Three Dog Night was in town at the Brady Theater. The concert did not sell out. Tonight STYX is playing at the Brady Theater. It is not sold out. Do you see where Im going with this? If we can not sell out the 2700 seat Brady, what makes them think we can sell out the 18,000 seat Arena? Where does the city think the other 16,000 people are going to come from to watch the Talons or the Oilers?

Remember this name...

An expensive lesson

Picher, Oklahoma is well on its way to becoming a ghost town with the government buying them out because of the lead and other contaminates in the soil and water. It will cost 80 million to by them out, yet the government has already spent 150 million trying to clean up the mess...

The resident of Layman Van Acres are in the same boat, but for some reason (we are guessing to try and get the property for next to nothing, or to double dip) the airport is doing everything within its power to not buy out the neighborhood, either with obviously flawed noise contour maps, or by not presenting the buyout option to the FAA in the first place.

How much more will the Airport waste before these people are properly compensated?

Why are our roads 9th worst?

Could it be because money originally allocated to the maintenence and repair of the roads never gets to where its supposed to go? Originally the 3rd penny was to be used to build, maintain and repair Tulsa roads because we just didnt have enough money coming in from other revenue sources to keep up with the citys growth... In the new 3rd penny only 27% is going for roads, the rest is going to useless crap that should be paid for in other ways... leaving us with little money to take care of the bad roads...

Now it comes out that the state fuel tax has been paying off the debt from Great Plains Airlines, it suprises me that News 8 even covered this...

State Using Motor Fuels Tax To Pay Off Losses On Airline

the money being used would be enough to "resurface 135 miles of road or rehabilitate 90 bridges."

Layman Van Acres in the News... Again

Thanks to Spartan School of Aeronautics' plan to make the agricultural field to the west of Layman Van Acres its campus, Roscoe Turner offered up at the city council meeting (then withdrew) a resolution to buy out the residents of Layman Van Acres. It was withdrawn because he said Mayor Taylor was receptive to the idea and would like to study it.

What I fail to see is the reasoning for the dragging of feet. The city would lose no money in the transaction. According to FAA guidelines, the buyout price would include buying the house at fair market value if the house was located in an area not affected buy the airport, paying for the resident to relocate to a new house, which would include closing costs, points (if applicable) and moving expenses... the high estimate on all those costs combined is $100,000 per home. of that the city is responsible for 5% of that, or $5000 per home. Here is where the city will get its money back, plus some. The houses can be sold to be moved off of their lots, those houses usually sell for a minimum of $5000 each, usually more. now with an area cleared for development, access to I-244, I-44, Hwy 169, the airport and a straight shot to the Port of Catoosa, the airport could lease or sell the land out to Industry.

With these developments the residents of Layman Van Acres are cautiously optimistic

Are we there yet?

"Democracy fails for the same reason communism failed: everyone feels they deserve something for nothing, yet there is no incentive to work. On paper Marxism and democracy look good, but -- I don’t know -- are people too greedy or too lazy or too ignorant? Democracy will fail when people realize they can vote themselves anything. Is it a human right to be entitled to loaf of bread and a glass of water if they are able but unwilling to work?"

Why did we give them money?

"American Airlines Arena opened in 1998 and is owned by the Miami Sports and Entertainment Authority. In 1999, American Airlines started paying $42 million for 20-year naming rights to the arena. The arena can hold 20,000 people durring a basketball game. The arena is home to the Miami Heat."

"American Airlines established a record when it purchased the building naming rights for $195 million." (American Airlines Arena, Dallas)

http://espn.go.com/sportsbusiness/s/stadiumnames.html

We just voted to give Ameican Airlines 4+ million to build temporary hangars while they spend over 8.6 million a year to have their name slapped on the side of a couple of buildings...

Baaaaah Baaaaaaah Baaaaaaah

Those who voted for the 3rd penny are one of two kinds of people, bought off or sheep. Whats even worse is that only 11% of the Tulsa population even bothered to do it's duty and vote. The remaining 89% sat on its collective ass. Tomorrow they will sit around and complain about how much they are paying in taxes, well guess what genius, if you had bothered to get involved the outcome could have been completely different. So here we are with 9% of our disposable income eaten away from our paycheck some of which is to pay for roads to an arena we cant afford.

The ultimate irony is that the 3rd penny list was crafted by LaFortune... who was voted out of office...

Im going to bed

Back to the drawing board

Tomorrow is a big day for Tulsa, its a chance for you, a Tulsa resident, to tell the city that you expect better of them when it comes to the 3rd penny. Its time that you say no to this 3rd Penny, tell them to complete the remaining projects from the previous 3rd Penny, and then they can come back and ask to extend it.

If this proposal was about infrastructure and roads I wouldnt even be typing this, but its about repairing pools we cant afford to fill, improving roads & parking for an arena we cant afford to build, its for repairing a roof on a convention center that Vision 2025 is supposed to fix.

Voting this penny down will not destroy Tulsa, but it will show that you are not a sheep willing to be herded around by your city masters.

say no now, say yes to the extension when it comes back, then we will look at any extension they may have after the older projects that were promised but no completed are finished. cause as it stands now the 3rd penny is nothing more than a money grab like  Vision 2025.

Its time you take control of your money

Singing in the rain

Tulsa's Blues Fest, for me, is now history, the wife and I are soaked to the bone and we would have really liked to see BB King on his farewell tour but there was another 5 hours to go and we just couldnt make it... yeah we are weak...

anyway here are the hightlights, at least from the Festival stage...

First up Friday night was Monte Montgomery out of Austin TX... the guy standing next to us summed up his performance... "How can that be topped?"

Second on stage was Eric Sardinas, his weapon of choice a slide guitar, probably the only blues you can headbang to..

Third up was Taj Mahal... weve been waiting 5 years to see him. He was scheduled to play in Eureka Springs in 01, sadly his daughter died in a car wreck earlier that week so he canceled... I can say it was worth the wait

Last on the schedule for Friday night was the Reverend Horton Heat, great act, but Im not real sure why he was at a blues festival

Saturday the gates opened to rain, and it kept on going...

First up was Chris Duarte from Atlanta, his style is Electric Blues and he put on an energetic show for the wet fans. I was planning on buying a CD or two off of him, but at 10.00 more than it costs through Amazon.com, I had to take a pass

Last show (for us) was Anthony Gomes from Canada via Chicago and Nashville. Who said a white boy from Canada cant play the blues? Im guessing a new CD is on the way as none of the music played was from any of his current CDs

Oil is down 8%

As soon as there was any sign that oil prices were going to climb all the gas stations raised their prices, the last time was around .10 a gallon, so I ask you... with oil falling to less than 70.00 a barrel, where is our break? cutting 8% off of gas that is costing us $2.69 a gallon should be around 2.47 a gallon...(a savings of about 4.00 per tank of gas) still way to high, but its quite obvious where the monster profits are coming from, they raise when there is a spike and they take their swet time lowering the price back down after the price of oil goes down.

Human Cattle

In relation to the previous article....

Could this be a test run for the Mark of The Beast?

Government Program Seeks to Tag EVERY Livestock Animal in the U.S.

People are ready to accept the Mark...

as can be seen on this Slashdot article (harsh lanugage warning ) some people are more than willing to accept the precursor to the Mark of the Beast, all in the name of conveinience...

"Being a developer myself, I am intrigued about building applications and solutions that will open my doors, unlock my car, log me on to my computer and control home automation."

"I would submit myself to that, I find it to be hassle-less in some cases, as long as there are no medical disadvantages."

"I'd do it because I'd love to be without the worries of my keys."

" For this reason I believe I am profiled far more than my fair share at the airport and selected for secondary inspection. I would gladly sport an implanted RFID tag that would instantly identify me as "OK"."

and finally...

"i suspect a looming generation will embrace chipping themselves in much the same way tatoos and piercings have been embraced. "

I suspect he is right...

130,000,000

Thats the number of automobiles on the road.
The government is wanting to get people to switch to alternative fuel cars.
What do we do with 130,000,000 cars already on the streets?
What about the people who cannot afford to buy a new car? it will take years for the alternative fuel cars to find their way down to the used market.
Most people cant afford to just lay out 15(?) grand on a new car.
The question we should be asking is why havent we built new refineries in the last 20 years to offset the obvious growth in population!
This isnt about greed, its about stupidity.
